kat--- i did a tiny replica ( not historically accurate but along the lines
of...) of a medieval journal that monks used to carry hanging from their
belts...  it's a longstitch binding;  the cover is suede and is long enough that a
flap wraps back over the front cover to protect the foreedge of the book. then
there's a long leather strap that can wrap several times around the book and
tuck into itself to keep it all closed. the suede seems to protect the pages
well, but is very soft and flexible. mine is 3" x 4" closed, but it could be
made larger if you needed to.

i have photos of it that i'll be happy to email to anyone who wants to see
them...
